The level of unemployment in Britain will top three million next year, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has warned.
A survey by the body has said that joblessness will continue to rise, taking the tally to 3.2 million in 2010.
The outlook is bleak for manufacturing and while the service sector outlook is not as gloomy as before, the prospect is still one of decline at present.
Predicting that there is "more pain to come" BCC director general David Frost called for government action to help businesses.
"To limit the upsurge in the jobless total, it is vital to slash the regulatory burden on business," he argued.
Those facing employment-related issues in a climate of reduced job security may wish to take legal advice.
The latest government figures, which were published last month, showed unemployment to have risen to 2.03 million.
