18/11/2009 Unfair dismissal cases considered in contracts row |
|
A row between a local authority and a trade union could see a number of unfair dismissal cases being lodged.
Sheffield City Council has asked its employees to accept a new pay scale, which it says will leave 80 per cent of its staff as well off or better, but mean cuts for some, the BBC reports.
Those who do not accept could lose their jobs and spokesman for the union Unison Kevin Osborne said: "This is just not an acceptable package. It never was an acceptable package."
He added that the body is consulting lawyers to see if they could sue for unfair dismissal on behalf of anyone who does have their contract terminated.
Those working in the capital who may be faced with a similar situation might wish to speak to employment lawyers in London to see if they can do likewise.
In another case, a judge gave permission last week for a whistleblower to sue former employer Balfour Beatty for unfair dismissal.
Alan Dransfield was made redundant by the building firm earlier this year, shortly after raising concerns over alleged health and safety breaches.
