Union calls for minimum wage change
The minimum wage paid to those aged 22 and over should be applied to 18-year-olds, a trades union has argued.

Unison has said that 18 to 21-year-olds should be paid the higher rate of £5.73 per hour, rather than the current £4.77.

Spokesperson for the union Sophie Madden said the situation was deterring some people of apprentice age from taking up such positions, leading to a waste of talent.

In addition to this, she argued: "For 18 to 21-year-olds we'd like them to be given the full adult rate because a lot of young people have similar costs to people who are over 25."

Age should not determine how much somebody is paid, Ms Madden commented.

Those wishing to check they are compliant with current employment regulations concerning the minimum wage may wish to take legal advice.

A recent study by the Association of Convenience Stores has found that 73 per cent believe the national minimum wage has diminished their competitiveness.
