26/11/2009 Union welcomes minimum wage decision |
|
Media and entertainment industry union Bectu has welcomed an employment tribunal decision that those employed on an expenses-only basis must be paid at least the national minimum wage.
The ruling has come after former art department assistant Nicola Vetta brought a case against London Dreams Motion Pictures over her remuneration when working on the set of the film Coulda Woulda Shoulda in July 2008.
It means that these rights apply even if a job is offered on expenses-only terms. Assistant general secretary at Bectu Martin Spence stated that the use of workers on such a basis puts those starting out in the industry at risk of "exploitation" and is giving the broadcasting industry a "bad name".
He added: "We hope that this judgement will draw a line in the sand and that we will see more employers complying with the law."
Those faced with an issue of their employer not paying the minimum wage may wish to speak to employment lawyers in London about the matter.
The wage works out at £5.80 per hour for those aged 22 and over and £4.83 for those between the ages of 18 and 21.
