The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has said that over half of its members made redundancies in the last three months of 2008. However, it added that 52 per cent of all FMB companies will make further redundancies during the first six months of 2009, which could amount to 90,000 jobs being lost. Richard Diment, director general of the FMB, said the figures are "truly devastating". "We know that when the recession last hit our industry 500,000 people were made redundant, we cannot allow that to happen again," he added. Mr Diment believes that the sector is "weakening at a shocking rate" and the government must take swift action to prevent any further decline, including cutting VAT to five per cent on home maintenance and repairs. Meanwhile, Age Concern has claimed that older workers in the UK are most at risk of being made redundant. |
