Workplace temperature regulations 'would have support'
There would be support for changes to employment law that would make employers have to introduce cooling measures once the workplace reaches a certain temperature, an expert has suggested.

A spokesperson for the Institute for Employment Studies said that "few" would disagree that a maximum temperature level should be put in place as "it is a health issue".

However, the representative warned that people in the UK are actually at greater risk of low temperatures at work.

"Little thought has perhaps been given to that and it might be time to do so," the spokesperson remarked.

The comments were made in response to last week's warning by the Trades Union Congress, which urged businesses to relax dress codes amid the summer heatwaves.

Among its recommendations were allowing people to dress less formally, distribution of fans and the provision of cool drinks.

RSA also advised cooling measures to be put in place to prevent a loss of productivity.
