17/11/2008 Government should "clarify" its position over flexible working |
|
The government has been urged to stop stalling over new flexible working laws. According to Personnel Today, officials have been unable to confirm whether a decision will be made before the end of the year to implement the Walsh Review in its entirety. Back in May, the business secretary accepted recommendations that the right to request flexible working should be rolled out to parents of children up to the age of 16. In August, a consultation was launched on the subject but new business secretary Peter Mandelson threw a spanner in the works when he said he would listen to calls for the extension to be shelved during the economic crisis. The Institute for Employment's principal consultant Mary Mercer told Personnel Today that the government "needs to clarify whether it believes what it said when it accepted the paper in May". "Failing to do so would see a loss of confidence at a most inopportune time," she added. According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, flexible working laws can help businesses to deal with difficult economic times.
