14/11/2008 Health and safety "critical" to a company's survival |

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has advised that in the current economic climate, health and safety is "critical in ensuring firms stay afloat". Accidents and ill health can put a tremendous strain on a company's budget and the economic environment is another reason for firms to take a more "robust" approach to health and safety. New statistics show that 229 people were killed in Britain's workplaces last year and IOSH president Ray Hurst suggests that to cut back on protection for workers to save costs would be both "irresponsible" and also "dangerous" for the future of the economy. Just short of 300,000 workers suffered serious injuries last year, while more than two million developed illness that they attributed to the working environment. "These failures cost British business 34 million lost working days. That's just like pouring money down the drain," Mr Hurst warned. The president said, although fatal accident figures are improving, there are still so many "preventable deaths" occurring in the construction and agriculture sectors.
