|
A planned law change that would provide greater inheritance rights for cohabiting couples has been attacked by head of the Bar Standards Board Lady Deech.
In a speech at Gresham College in London, she argued that the introduction of such rules - proposed recently by the Law Commission - would deny people the freedom to live as they wish and "retards the emancipation of women".
Lady Deech added: "Women do not need and ought not to require to be kept by men after their relationship has come to an end." Such views follow previous comments made during her series of talks at the college attacking divorce laws that allow ex-wives to walk away with half their husbands' fortunes.
Those who are cohabiting and wish to make arrangements about their finances in the event of a split may want to speak to family solicitors about putting some sort of agreement in place.
Another argument recently voiced by Lady Deech is that engaged couples should be obliged to adopt prenuptial agreements, as is the case in continental European countries.
