It has been claimed that the uncertain financial climate is putting pressure on couples and could lead to more divorces and break-ups. Around one in six couples (17 per cent) could part ways in 2009 as a result of the recession, a poll carried out Harris Interactive on behalf of Metro has found. It was revealed that three per cent of partnerships believe that it is "extremely likely" that their relationship will not last until the end of December, with cash concerns the largest burden on the relationship. The study also discovered that 11 per cent of respondents feel that their dwindling cash and the pressurised financial environment is resulting in more arguments. However, earlier this year, Kevin Morgan, managing director of Consilium Financial Planning, claimed that the credit crunch could see a further decline in divorce rates. He added that in the majority of cases the equity in the marriage is property and if this cannot be sold it makes it more difficult to "release funds".
