17/06/2009 Marriage support call may raise law change prospect |
|
A judge has called for a change in attitudes to reduce the level of marriage breakdown in Britain, something that may have implications for divorce law.
Family division judge Mr Justice Coleridge said that a commission drawn from across the political spectrum should be established with the aim of finding ways of reaffirming marriage as the "gold standard" of relationships.
He argued that this is vital because of the effect divorce can have on children.
Such arguments may influence changes in the law - like preferential taxation - that could seek to convey advantages on marriage.
Those planning to draw up agreements such as prenuptials may wish to see family solicitors to discuss ways these might be affected by any law change.
Legislation may come as early as next year should the Conservatives win power at the next general election.
The party's policy is to "recognise marriage in the tax and benefits system".
