Taking out a prenuptial agreement is a practical measure that is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, an expert has noted.
Writing for the Financial Times, proposition director of insurance firm Bright Grey Roger Edwards said the device is no longer the preserve of the rich and is being used more by the population at large.
He stated that those marrying a second time, older couples and civil partners will all have good reason to view a prenuptial as a "sensible" move to protect against the loss of their assets.
While it should be hoped that a split will not take place, such a document "will lessen the heartache and pain that goes with a marriage or civil partnership break-up when dividing up the assets," he added.
Those keen on taking out a prenuptial agreement may wish to speak to a family lawyer about the issue.
To be effective, a prenuptial must be drawn up properly and should never be constructed just a few days before a wedding, Birmingham-based law partner Helen Jane Arnold told the Birmingham Post earlier this month.
Flawed documents are less likely to be taken into account in divorce proceedings, she remarked.
