20/11/2009 Small claims pose cohabitation case difficulty |
|
A row between two people ending their cohabitation has ended up having the disposal of small items disputed in court, it has been revealed.
Despite both having well-paid jobs and having shared a £500,000 home, Robin Williams and Anthony Hull are now to fight out in the High Court issues such as who gets the cheese grater, the curtains and some paint pots, as well as the issue of the home ownership itself.
So far, Mr Hull has won one part of the battle when the judge found that a 'without prejudice' letter he wrote in 2007 cannot be taken as evidence.
As the couple are not married, the dispute cannot be settled in the manner of a divorce case and those who are cohabiting may wish to speak to a family law solicitor to draw up a cohabitation agreement in the event of their relationship breaking up.
Introducing laws that automatically grant the same rights as married people to cohabiting couples would be a bad move, head of the Bar Standards Board Lady Deech argued this week.
She said it would hold back the "emancipation of women".
