Conservative leader David Cameron has pledged that he will relax regulations that stop housing associations and developers from converting empty properties into housing.
His Empty Property Rescue Scheme (EPRS) will reportedly offer greater flexibility for housing associations to rescue empty dwellings from disuse, of which there are almost one million in the UK.
Despite the hundreds of thousands of empty properties, the Conservatives said that there are 1.8 million families waiting for housing.
Announcing the EPRS, Mr Cameron said: "That's why the Conservatives will temporarily relax Labour's stringent rules and regulations, making it easier for the affordable housing sector to bring some of the one million empty homes in the UK into use."
The opposition leader believes that the scheme will help the 4.5 million people on the social housing waiting list, as well as provide support for the 100 families who are having their homes repossessed every day.
Meanwhile, the Homeowners Advice Centre has claimed that a large increase in repossessions could run the risk of pleasant areas being turned into "ghetto-like estates".
