Private house builders should be handing over their projects to create social housing.
That is the view of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT), which has called for the government to make 'radical policies' to reverse the current housing situation.
According to a spokesman for UCATT, the current situation is causing social problems in society.
He explained: "As soon as you start taking people off the waiting list and you move in social housing, you take the pressure off the housing industry. You also restart the house building sector."
Although the government currently has targets under their 'Housing Green Paper' to create a total of three million new homes by 2020, only 66,220 new home have been built in 2008.
This is according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors UK construction market survey 2008.
The survey also revealed that overall construction workloads have declined at their fastest rate since the survey was first published 14 years ago. |
