The UK is in "desperate need" of affordable housing to help boost its ailing economy.
That is the opinion of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which has responded to figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) that show a drop in orders for new houses.
Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary, has said that the construction sector had been hit the hardest by the recession but that did not negate the need for affordable housing.
Mr Barber also warned that the government's targets would not be met unless there was 'decisive action'.
He said: "Bringing forward major infrastructure projects is a sensible first step, but far more needs to be done as it will deliver homes, jobs and exactly the right kind of boost that an economy in recession needs."
The National Housing Federation released statistics this week which showed that a quarter of homes in the City of London were owned by people who didnt live there full time and that the waiting lists for affordable homes in the area had increased by 115 per cent over the last five years. |
