01/07/2009 Iraq bomb victim brings "landmark" legal case |
|
A man who was injured in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq has made a claim for damages against the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the private consultancy that hired him to work there.
Graham Hopps, a 45-year-old engineer, alleges that the MoD and Mott MacDonald did not provide adequately protected vehicles for use on 'unapproved' driving routes.
According to the Times, it is a "landmark" case "that could pave the way for other civilians injured in war zones to sue their employers".
Mr Hopps lost his right shoulder in the bomb blast in 2003. He was travelling in an unarmoured Land Rover Discovery on a road known locally as 'bomb alley'.
He told the news provider that the litigation law case is a significant one both for himself and "every other contractor that works out in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan".
The Telegraph reported that Mr Hopps is seeking more than £1 million in compensation.
