Cheltenham Borough Council is reportedly suing a former managing director, who allegedly told mistruths on a job application, for close to £1 million. Christine Laird, 52, is being taken to court by the council and is facing claims that she lied about her medical records and her history of depression when she took up the position. Ms Laird was absent from work from June 2004 and received full pay before leaving the following year and the council is claiming that her offering of false answers makes her guilty of "fraudulent or negligent misrepresentation" and "deceit". The council claims that she failed to disclose three bouts of depressive illness. Cheltenham's counsel Tim Kerr QC, says: "As a result, the council was wrongly advised that she was medically fit for the job and it proceeded to implement its decision - reached by a narrow 18 to 17 majority - to employ her." "In consequence, the authority sustained loss and damage of just over £982,000." Lying on your CV or in job interviews can have serious consequences, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. |
