A new survey has found that a significant amount of people in the UK have no secure way to store their important documents.
Standard Life has found that 49 per cent of Britons do not have a safe place to keep their will or funeral arrangements.
It was also revealed that, although 40 per cent of people have a clear indication of what kind of funeral they want and feel strongly about the arrangements, only 19 per cent have committed their funeral wishes to paper.
Julie Hutchison, head of estate planning at Standard Life, says that formulating a will and keeping it current can save family and friends a "great deal of distress".
It can also save loved ones a great deal of money so should be seen as a "priority", no matter what age you are, she added.
The 2008 Wills and Trusts Research Report has discovered that many people in the UK have to get their affairs in order and are not aware of the "benefits of thorough estate planning and the tax exemptions and allocations they may be entitled to".
According to the Natural Death Centre, considering your funeral wishes allows you to make "financially advantageous provisions".
