The Royal Mail has told a member of the public he is not entitled to personal injury compensation after intervening to stop a delivery van rolling across a main road.
Robert Moore, an artist from Bristol, wrote to the postal service after cracking a rib by blocking the van, which was rolling downhill after the driver had failed to apply the handbrake.
However, the Royal Mail told him he would not be entitled to any claim as he had been injured through his own voluntary actions.
Writing to Mr Moore's solicitors, it stated: "We cannot be held responsible for your client's injuries in choosing to stop a moving van without considering the personal consequences."
The postal service has subsequently apologised for the letter and has said it is now discussing the issue with Mr Moore.
Various issues arising from personal injury claim matters will be discussed by those working in the sector at the Claims Management Conference, which is to be held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on April 1st.
