11/06/2009 Accidental landlords advised of law over cannabis |
|
People who have become 'accidental landlords' and are renting out property due to necessity should ensure they are complying with all the laws involved in letting, it has been stated.
Managing director of the Buy-to-Let Show Oliver Romain said: "I would urge anybody that has become an accidental landlord recently, to do their research, and obey all the laws that apply."
Tenants misusing homes as cannabis factories is a growing problem people should be wary of, he noted, warning that "nobody is safe from it" and urging landlords to carry out their research and get references.
Those who need to know more about their legal responsibilities as landlords may wish to consult a property lawyer.
Earlier this week the National Landlords' Association said those renting out property should ensure they carry out regular inspections to avoid this sort of misuse.
It also said references must be checked and six months advance rent should never be taken the last being a common practice for such criminals.
