24/06/2009 Boost in legal aid to fight repossession welcomed |
|
An increase in the funding available to householders struggling to avoid repossession to contest court cases has been welcomed by the Money Advice Trust.
Responding to the announcement by housing minister John Healey of a doubling of funding for free legal advice to homeowners in such a position, spokesperson at the Trust Beccy Boden Wilks said this will "definitely" have a positive effect.
She predicted this will start to impact on figures for repossessions in the third quarter, commenting: "Hopefully that [extra funding] will have an impact as well in reducing the number of people that are looking at repossession."
Those facing the threat of losing their home may wish to speak to a property lawyer about what they can do to avoid such a fate.
Announcing the funding this week, Mr Healey described it as "real backstop help" for those in danger of being repossessed.
He noted that even in court, "all's not lost", as four out of five cases see the repossession process stalled.
