Government pledge over rogue landlords |

Plans to introduce a register of landlords to root out rogue operators have been scrutinised by the National Landlords Association (NLA) at its 2009 national conference.
Minister with responsibility for the private-rented sector Ian Austin spoke at the event, stating that it is the government's intention to use such a register to curb illegal activity.
However, delegates have been unhappy with the plan and NLA chairman David Salusbury argued that the plan would be bureaucratic and ineffective.
Speaking about rogue landlords, he said: "It is this small minority which brings the whole private-rented sector into disrepute and the NLA is determined to ensure that government measures focus on this and not on over-burdening the law-abiding majority."
Those who are faced with problems from a landlord acting illegally may wish to speak to a property lawyer about their rights.
In another appeal to the government, the NLA recently asked for the rental tax threshold of the rent-a-room scheme to be increased.
The first £4,250 has been tax free since 1997-98 and the body noted that 60 per cent of rooms are now offered out for more than this, including 91 per cent in London.
