13/01/2009 House sales per surveyor 'hit record low' |
|
The average number of transactions per surveyor fell to a new low last month, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics). In its housing market survey, the organisation found that over the last three months the average number of transactions per agency is now at 10.1, which is down from 10.6 in November. This represents the lowest figure since the survey began over 30 years ago. However, Rics claimed that there are positive signs, with 17 per cent more surveyors reporting a rise than a fall in new buyer enquiries, representing a one percentage point increase from November. Commenting, Rics spokesperson Ian Perry said that buyer interest is now at levels "not seen since 2006". Paul Holmes, chief executive of advisory group Firstrung, believes that the future for first-time buyers is "extremely bright" but they are going to have to put a serious amount of money away over the next year or so in order to save up a hefty deposit.
