09/06/2009 Landlords warned over illegal cannabis factories |
|
Landlords have been warned about the problems that can potentially be posed by tenants using properties as cannabis factories.
The National Landlords' Association (NLA) has said those renting out homes have a responsibility to know what is going on in their properties, as apart from breaking drug laws, such activity can be related to crimes such as dealing in hard drugs and people trafficking.
Measures landlords can take include making regular inspections of properties, the NLA stated, noting that this requires giving tenants sufficient notice.
Landlords may also have to evict drug users and could benefit from seeing a solicitor to check their legal rights in such matters.
The NLA also advised that landlords should insist on references from previous landlords, avoid taking six months rent upfront and ask the neighbours to inform them of suspicious activities.
Such a warning was given out as part of National Tackling Drugs Week.
The Home Office has said the week exists to help police and local agencies show what they are doing to deal with the issue.
