05/08/2009 Letting agents 'willing to break discrimination laws' |
|
A number of letting agents have been found to be willing to discriminate against migrant tenants on behalf of landlords.
More than half of firms contacted in an undercover investigation by the BBC said they were prepared to be prejudiced against this demographic if a landlord requested it.
Such actions have residential property law implications as the Race Relations Act 1976 bans discrimination of this nature in England, Wales and Scotland.
Many of those approached by the BBC refused to break the law, but lawyer Arpita Dutt told the news provider that this should be the case across the whole industry.
"What they should be saying is, 'I can't do this, I can't act on those instructions'," she remarked, adding that they should tell landlords that such practices are illegal.
In a statement published yesterday, the National Landlords Association did not respond to the investigation's findings, but said that it is available for comment.
