28/01/2010 NLA criticises government stance on shared housing |
|
Government proposals to limit the supply of shared housing in the UK will cause negative repercussions for landlords, tenants and authorities alike, according to the National Landlords Association (NLA).
The body has expressed concern that suggestions to introduce planning permission requirements for new shared housing will make it harder for students and young professionals to find accommodation.
It also suggested that local authorities will not be able to cope with the increased bureaucracy workloads the legal change would entail.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, therefore called on the government to reconsider the "draconian" plans.
He said: "This entire package will not contribute to the vibrant rental market the government says it wants."
Indeed, landlords consulting property lawyers over making new purchases could prove vital to the residential sector over the coming year.
London property site upad.co.uk forecast earlier this week that demand for rented property is due to increase because of the number of people whose finances have been affected by the recession.
