The way housing benefits are paid is leading to more property investors suffering repossession as they are less likely to receive rental payments, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has argued.
A change that came into force a year ago has seen the local housing allowance (LHA) benefit paid directly to tenants, whereas before there was an option to have it paid direct to the landlord, something the NLA has said led to some people pocketing the cash rather than paying their rent.
This in turn has resulted in increased repossessions for landlords and an NLA survey has found that 52 per cent of its members would not let to tenants on LHA or are less likely to than before.
Landlords keen to establish their rights in relation to tenancies may wish to take legal advice on such matters.
Last month Citizens Advice and housing charity Shelter launched a joint campaign to highlight the risk to tenants of being evicted with little or no notice due to landlords having properties repossessed.
