A call by the National Landlords Association (NLA) for a UK-wide register of landlords has been backed by the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (Arla). Such an idea has risen in response to the government's Rugg review of the private lettings industry and Arla's operations manager Ian Potter said such a system would be highly beneficial. Noting that Arla runs its own licensing scheme for agents, he remarked: "Exploitation of vulnerable tenants by a small minority of landlords undermines the professionalism of the broader sector and creates the negative consumer perceptions that have sometimes blighted the rental market." Bad practice could be dealt with and consumers made more aware of the obligations of landlords if such a database were instituted, Mr Potter argued. Tenants who may have a current problem with their landlord could benefit from speaking to a property lawyer. The NLA announced this week that it has launched its own member database so that would-be tenants can verify if a landlord claiming to be a member of the body is telling the truth.
