Plans to change residential property law so that tenants have greater legal protection should their apartments be repossessed have been welcomed by one industry expert.
Keshav Thukaram, Smartlandlord.co.uk's managing director, stated that rent payers should not be forced to suffer as a result of landlords stretching their finances too far - something that it is a "real threat" at the moment.
Currently, some tenants are in a position where they could be thrown out of their homes with little notice if repossession occurs.
However, this week housing minister John Healey outlined proposals to change the law so that this demographic has more rights.
Mr Thukaram said: "We ... welcome this important step to stabilise the private rented sector, to ensure that tenants don't fall victim to mismanagement by hapless private landlords."
A consultation and impact assessment entitled 'Lender repossession of residential property: protection of tenants' was launched by Communities and Local Government yesterday.
