New statistics have found that the south-east is the most popular goal for people when they up sticks and move home.
Halifax has revealed that between 1998 and 2007, 2.2 million moved to the area from other regions, far more than those who moved to London.
A total of 1.6 million headed to London during the same period and the south-east also saw the largest net gain from internal migration - calculated as immigration less emigration to and from other UK regions.
Around 550,889 more people have moved there from elsewhere in the UK than have left to live in another region, compared to London's population rising by a net 370,000.
"Regions in southern England saw the largest gain from internal migration with the south-east proving the most popular region for people to move to from elsewhere in the UK," Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, said.
Last year, Liam Bailey, a spokesperson for Knight Frank, said that the strongest markets over the next few years will be London and the south-east because of the "weight of demand for accommodation" in these areas.
