27/03/2009 Warning over tenant evictions |
|
Many tenants are at risk of becoming homeless because of buy-to-let landlords suffering repossession, charities have warned. Shelter, Citizens Advice, Crisis and the Chartered Institute of Housing have joined forces to raise awareness of the issue. Noting that there could be as many as 8,000 such repossessions this year, the charities are calling on MPs to pass a new law that requires any such action to be deferred until tenants can find alternative accommodation. Those finding themselves in such a situation may wish to take legal advice over the matter. Recent surveys have found that average rents have been falling due to an increase in the amount of rental property available. Editor of Property Hawk Chris Horne said that many tenants are "getting savvy in the respect that they are asking for a little bit more," such as lower rents and better facilities, which landlords may be willing to do to retain them.
