29/12/2009 Personal injury payouts criticised |
|
Some personal injury payouts have come in for criticism from a member of parliament. MP for Hornchurch in Essex Nicholas Brokenshire spoke out after Havering Council paid £21,000 to an official who fell off a stool, while another received £6,000 for slipping on gravy, the Daily Telegraph reports. Mr Brokenshire said the situation represented a "compensation culture". However, a spokesman for the council responded: "There are national guidelines on personal injury claims set by the Judicial Studies Board." Those who have a personal injury claim may wish to speak to Westminster lawyers to see if they are entitled to compensation.
Public sector workers have received millions in claims brought by trades union Unison this year, with these being far from frivolous according to general secretary of the body Dave Prentis. Calling for more protection for members who made claims following assaults, he said: "The number of attacks on staff going about their jobs is sickening." Written by Anthony Dyson
