26/10/2009 Half of Britons 'have no written wills' |
|
Over half of UK adults have not written a will, a new survey has revealed. Consumer website Unbiased.co.uk said that 57 per cent of the population lacks such a document, including 65 per cent of those with children aged under 18. Marking the start of Write a Will Week, the site noted that inheritance money can be saved from the taxman through such a measure, while it can also help unmarried couples, as the surviving partner is not automatically entitled to inherit anything. Those keen to cover these issues may wish to consult a lawyer skilled in will drafting. Chief executive of Unbiased.co.uk Karen Barrett said: "Seeking professional legal and financial advice from a solicitor and an IFA [independent financial advisor] means you can get your affairs in order so that your family or friends receive the inheritance you want them to." One measure people can ensure when will writing is that any charity donations they want to make are put in place. Legacy fundraising manager at Cancer Research UK Nick Georgiadis was recently quoted by the South Wales Echo as saying that the work the body carries out could not go on without legacy donations.
