Most people in Britain aged between 18 and 30 do not have a will, according to new figures from the Fellowship of Professional Willwriters and Probate Practitioners.
The data revealed that of this demographic, 85 per cent had made no document to detail the disposal of their assets.
Of those without a will, 53 per cent had children, which could mean that in the event of a young parent dying the financial future of such offspring could be compromised.
Nearly a quarter said they were too young to make wills and two-thirds of those without such documentation said they would wait until they were over 50 before preparing one.
Fellowship president Rita Leat said: "People should not take things for granted and assume that their estate will automatically go to their loved ones."
As well as providing security for children, wills can also help fund charities.
Legacy Foresight's Legacy Monitor programme recently found that the last two years has seen a nine per cent rise in the number of bequests to good causes.
