Digital Era

A Conversation with William Sturges Operational Leaders

As William Sturges embarks on a new phase of growth, we asked Robert Talbot, Practice Manager and Alex Bennett, Office Manager how the firm is evolving its operational needs in a digital era.

Q: The firm has recently undergone a brand refresh. How does this reflect the operational changes happening behind the scenes?

Alex: Having been with the firm for over 25 years, I’ve witnessed numerous changes, but this refresh feels different. It’s comprehensive, touching every aspect of our operations. We’re not just updating our image; we’re enhancing our entire service delivery model while preserving the personal touch that has always distinguished William Sturges.

Robert: The brand refresh perfectly captures the evolution happening throughout William Sturges. While our new strapline “Your Partners in Law” speaks to our client relationships, it also reflects our internal approach to operations. We’re creating more collaborative workflows and implementing systems that enable our teams to work more effectively together and deliver an even more efficient service for our clients.

Q: How does the firm’s operational strategy support its partner-led approach?

Robert: Our operational systems are designed to maximise the time our partners can spend with clients. By streamlining administrative processes and implementing efficient technologies, we enable our partners to focus on what they do best—providing expert legal guidance and building strong client relationships

Q: Can you tell us about the firm’s recent digital transformation initiatives?

Alex: One of our most significant recent projects has been the transition to a fully hosted case management system. This move away from traditional on-site servers has dramatically improved our operational efficiency and flexibility. It’s enabling our partners and lawyers to collaborate more effectively and serve clients better, regardless of location.

Q: How is William Sturges approaching the emergence of AI in the legal sector?

Robert: We’re taking a measured, strategic approach to AI. Our focus is on understanding how these technologies can enhance our services while maintaining the high standards our clients expect. We’re closely monitoring developments and evaluating potential applications, but we’re mindful that AI should complement, not replace, the expertise and personal service that define William Sturges. When the time comes to implement AI tools, we’ll ensure our teams receive comprehensive training and support.

Q: How would you describe the culture at William Sturges?

Robert: Our culture combines respect for our heritage with an openness to new ideas. We maintain the professional excellence that has defined us for nearly 250 years while creating an environment where innovation is encouraged. It’s a balance that makes William Sturges special – we’re progressive while remaining true to our core values.

Alex: The culture here is genuinely collaborative. Whether you’re a partner, lawyer, or support staff, everyone’s contribution is valued. This inclusive approach has been crucial in successfully implementing changes while maintaining team cohesion and service quality.

Q: What initiatives are in place to support professional development?

Alex: We’ve been developing training programmes that cover both technical skills and soft skills. Investing in our people is crucial to supporting our employee’s personal development and business growth while maintaining our high service standards.

Q: What’s next in William Sturges’ evolution?

Robert: We continue exploring ways to enhance our service delivery while maintaining the personal touch that clients value. This includes evaluating new technologies, refining our processes, and investing in our people. The brand refresh has given us a perfect platform for these developments.

Alex: The key is to keep evolving while staying true to what makes William Sturges special. We’re excited about the future and confident that our operational foundations will support the firm’s continued growth and success.
